The yellow areas in the above picture were all habitats of giant pandas, showcasing their extremely wide distribution. Now, however, we can only find them at the red areas in the picture above, namely the Qinling Mountains, Minshan Mountains, Qionglai Mountains, Daxiangling Mountains, and Xiaoxiangling Mountains, from top to bottom.
The giant panda inhabits in high mountains and deep valleys at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River on the windward side of the southeast monsoons, with a cool and damp climate, and humidity rate often above 80%. Giant pandas are moisture-loving animals that live in six narrow strips including the Minshan Mountains, Qionglai Mountains, Liangshan Mountains, Daxiangling Mountains, Xiaoxiangling Mountains, and Qinling Mountains, located in 45 counties (cities) of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. The area is over 20,000km2, covering a population of about 1,600, of which more than 80% are living in Sichuan. Their habitats are mostly with gentle slopes of 20° or below, such as gullies, mountainsides, and valley terraces, where dense forests, well-grown bamboos, and steady temperatures offer them comfortable shelters and rich food and water resources.
